This is my plan to get extra rewards.
- The great thing about credit cards is that they offer cash back on purchases you make.
- These are my strategies to recover extra money in 2022.
Consumers are often warned that credit cards can be dangerous. But in reality, they offer many benefits, one of which is the opportunity to earn cash back on purchases you were already planning to make.
It is for this reason (among others) that I use credit cards as often as possible. Not only do they help me keep track of my spending (when I pay cash, I tend to forget how much I’ve spent and where), but I love the idea of getting money back for things I need to buy, like gas for my car and groceries to feed my family.
I usually get a decent amount of cash from my credit cards. But this year, I hope to see that total increase. And I’m employing these strategies to help make that happen.
1. Sign up for a new card at the right time
Last year, I didn’t have any big travel plans and didn’t make any major purchases, so it wasn’t the right time to apply for a new credit card with a sign-up bonus.
This year, however, I have a few bigger purchases on my radar. My kitchen table is in bad shape and in need of an update, and we may want to replace one of our sofas that has seen better days. Also, we may have to pay a hefty bill for the orthodontist and while I’m not too excited about that, it’s something I’ve prepared myself for.
What I plan to do is apply for a new credit card with a generous sign-up bonus a few weeks before I’m ready to make those furniture purchases, or a few weeks before our orthodontist bills start coming in. That way, you’ll be more likely to meet the spending requirement to claim any bonuses you target.
2. Use my cards more strategically
One of my credit cards usually offers good rewards, so I tend to use it more often. But recently, I discovered that another credit card of mine actually offers more cash back at certain retailers at specific points throughout the year. This year, I plan to better track those quarterly bonus categories so I can shift my credit card usage to maximize my cash back.
3. Travel more
Last year, I took some modest trips, but was cautious about traveling due to a combination of unexpected home repairs and the pandemic. In 2022, I hope to travel more and have been saving money to make it possible. But I also know that by spending more on travel, you’ll likely earn extra cash back for things like gas, lodging, dining, and entertainment.
One of the reasons I enjoy receiving cash back on my credit cards is that my family uses that money as bonus cash. Because we’re pretty good savers, we allow ourselves to use our credit card cash back for things like entertainment, splurges, and short trips. I hope the above strategies will give us extra cash back and more fun times to enjoy together.
